Whakahoro Run – Stage 1

We depart Taumarunui at 8.00am on the first leg of this historic journey that was last done in 1928. The scenery changes from farmland to rugged bush and by days end we will be at Whakahoro, the gateway to the WhanganuiNational Park. We spend the night in the comfort of a lodge enjoying fine food, a campfire and reliving the adventures of the day.

Bridge to Nowhere Run – Stage 2
This most scenic stretch of the river proceeds through a series deep gorges with steep banks. The splendor of the rugged formations and vertical drops is surpassed only by the spectacular beauty of the untouched sub-tropical flora.
We will visit the Bridge to Nowhere and hear its strange story. At mid afternoon we berth at the Bridge to Nowhere lodge where we enjoy a buffet dinner and stay the night in the comfort of this iconic location.

Wanganui Run – Stage 3

Breakfast then underway to see the famous drop scene, historic Pipiriki, Jerusalem with its microclimate that once made it the fruit bowl of New Zealand, Moutoa Island, the site of a fierce battle then the beautifully restored flour mill at Matahiwi. The river is becoming wider as we approach historic Wanganui in the late afternoon.

Note:                            The first 20 km from Taumarunui needs quite a lot of water to be negotiated safely. If there are any safety concerns we reserve the right to commence the journey at Ohinepane or below but be assured we will endeavour to start at Taumarunui.
