The 3 sections of the river provide quite different experiences.  In turn these are quite different when boated upriver with winching and poling or downriver shooting the rapids.

Lower Section -

The lower 50 miles can be boated all year round but normally needs to be winched or poled through some rapids. It is highly significant in the early history of this country and there are many interesting stories to be told and sights to see. Ideally suited to summertime family trips, picnic days and Marae experiences.

Middle Section -

The middle 50 miles with its steep cliffs and narrow gorges is the most scenic and can be boated all year round. Suited to one and two day trips where one may sit back in comfort and enjoy the wonders of nature.
Ideal for those days the mountain is closed to skiing.

Upper Section -

The upper 40 miles is shallow and rocky and the most difficult boating when water levels are low. Best boating is from May to November and after heavy rain. Our 3 and 4 day trips include this section.

See trip details for costs.
